We’ve been lucky to have dressed some gorgeous and stunning queer couples for their weddings in bespoke Aayka attire.

That’s what led us to write this article to inspire you, so that you feel comfortable and confident in your skin in whichever outfit you feel comfortable in.

We’ve curated some suggestions for LGBTQIA+ Indian Wedding Outfits, showcasing a myriad of ideas that honor both heritage and individuality.

Weddings are not just ceremonies; they are declarations of love and identity. 

For the LGBTQIA+ community, wedding attire becomes a blank canvas to express their true selves, challenging conventional norms, if they so desire. 

The quintessence of inclusivity in Indian wedding fashion lies in its ability to adapt and resonate with every individual because there are so many choices and options versus typical Western wedding outfits like a gown and suit.  

Traditional garments, rich in cultural significance, can be reimagined to celebrate love in all its forms, transcending gender binaries and societal expectations.

Femme Outfits

For those identifying or wishing to adorn an attire with feminine aesthetics, the world of Indian wedding fashion offers a wide range of options. 

Customization is key – it's about tailoring each outfit to reflect the wearer's personality. 

From the classic elegance of a Lehenga, adorned with intricate handwork, to a modern twist on a wedding Sari, each piece can be customized to make you feel like the person you wanted to be at your wedding. 

Contemporary designs can blend with traditional motifs, allowing brides to both honor their heritage and their unique love story.

1. Saree

A classic choice for Indian weddings. Sarees come in various fabrics like silk, georgette, and chiffon, adorned with intricate embroidery, sequins, or zari work with popular styles including Banarasi, Kanjeevaram, and Paithani sarees.

2. Half Saree

Popular in South India, a half saree involves a skirt, a blouse, and a draped dupatta that gives the illusion of a saree. 

Look at how the rich detail in the skirt above pairs with a velvet, plain blouse with it’s green sleeve detail and the draping of the dupatta.

3. Lehenga Choli

A lehenga is a long, embroidered skirt paired with a choli (blouse) and a dupatta (shawl). 

You can choose from heavily embroidered bridal lehengas to lighter, more contemporary designs.

4. Anarkali Suit

This is a long, frock-style top paired with slim-fitting bottoms. Anarkalis are known for their flowing silhouettes and can be heavily embroidered or embellished for wedding occasions.

5. Sharara and Gharara

Both are traditional Lucknowi outfits. A sharara, seen in the picture above, is a pair of wide-legged pants that flare dramatically from the knee downwards, often paired with a short kurta and dupatta. 

 A gharara is similar but has a more pronounced flare and is fitted till the knee.

6. Salwar Kameez

A versatile and comfortable option, consisting of a kameez (tunic) and salwar (pants). For weddings, they are often made in luxurious fabrics and adorned with detailed embroidery.

7. Indo-Western Gowns

These are a fusion of Indian and Western styles, perfect for pre-wedding events like cocktail parties. They often feature Indian embroidery and embellishments on western gown silhouettes.

Masc Outfits 

Masculine outfits in Indian weddings have evolved from the standard sherwani to more expressive forms. 

Same-sex couples often seek coordination in their attire, opting for complementary colors or matching embroidery. 

A Sherwani, for instance, can be crafted in vibrant hues, breaking away from conventional palettes, while still embodying regal elegance. 

It’s about striking a balance between cultural richness and personal expression!

1. Sherwani

A long coat-like garment, often richly decorated with embroidery, perfect for the groom or male guests. It's traditionally worn with a churidar (tight-fitting trousers) or dhoti.

2. Kurta Pajama

A comfortable and versatile choice, consisting of a long shirt (kurta) and loose-fitting trousers (pajama). For weddings, they are often made in richer fabrics and may feature detailed embroidery.

3. Bandhgala Suit

Also known as the Jodhpuri suit, it includes a coat and trousers, sometimes accompanied by a vest. It's a formal and elegant choice, often tailored in luxurious fabrics.

4. Achkan

Similar to a sherwani but shorter in length, an achkan is a knee-length jacket worn with churidar pants. It's a classic and sophisticated outfit choice, as can be seen above where one of our clients chose to pair our sleeveless pistachio jacket

5. Indo-Western Suit

A fusion of Indian and Western fashion, these suits blend elements like a Nehru collar with western-style suits, often featuring Indian embroidery or patterns, giving a wide range of customization for multi-cultural weddings.

6. Dhoti Kurta

A traditional Indian outfit, the dhoti is a piece of cloth wrapped around the waist and legs, paired with a kurta. It's a culturally rich attire, often chosen for traditional ceremonies.

7. Pathani Suit

Comprising a long kurta and loose trousers, this outfit is known for its simplicity and comfort. It's a popular choice for its relaxed yet stylish look.

8. Nehru Jacket

A hip-length tailored coat with a mandarin collar can be worn over a kurta or a shirt for a semi-formal look. It's versatile and trendy.

9. Safa (Turban)

Often worn by grooms (but needn’t be only for them!), it's a long piece of cloth wrapped around the head. Safas can be color-coordinated with your or your partner’s outfit!

10. Angrakha

An ancient style where the kurta top wraps around the body and is tied. It has a distinctive traditional look and is often chosen for its unique style.
